You're probably running into disk IO issues with all of the other data.
Are you reading the data off the same EVA array that you are writing it
to?

It would depend a lot on what your “disk”(s) and “tape”(s) are. We
typically see much faster backup to Data Domain than to Ultrium Tape.
Is your target “disk” part of the server itself? Externally attached
storage? SAN? NAS? iSCSI? ATA drives? Fibre drives? SSD Drives? Is
it JBOD? RAID1? RAID5? RAID10? Are you doing dedupe? If so is it at
the server or at the target?

I ran a test backup to Disk and found that the backup took over 7 hours.
when running the same backup to tape, it took 5 hours!
The files was a mixture of small profile type files and folders.
So not too impressed with the speed. Unless some tuning can be done ?

Watching this thread I have to put in my 2 cents.
One of the key points is having to have copies offsite.
So our search of de-dup has to include replication to the dr site where we
have a live master, and we need to be able to mount that replicated copy
on to that master to be able to do restores.

This would be a very good time for you to investigate utilizing client
side de-dupe, Pure Disk, Media Server De-Dupe, one of the NBU appliances
(which have storage built in), or a Data Domain.

or a Quantum ;-)
