We have about 5 centos 3 boxes that get backed up just fine with
netbackup 5.1 MP2.

Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere.

Use bpclntcmd to verify network connectivity with netbackup:

Master -> Client:

bpclntcmd -ip <Client IP Address>
bpclntcmd -hn <Client Name>
bpclntcmd -self

Client -> Master:

bpclntcmd -ip <Master IP Address>
bpclntcmd -hn <Client Name>
bpclntcmd -self
