Firstly - James, I am sorry if it offended you by responding to the group. There was nothing personal in your reply so I chose to respond to the group, for the benefit of the group.

Secondly, I think you may be right about the media, I have removed the tapes from the system just in case. Thanks for your help.

firstly - I sent you a private email and I do not appreciate your forwarding it
on to a public mailing list.

Secondly - no, I don't know that there is a connection. What I do know is that
at the two sites I have seen error 174 with a similar signature to yours, those
sites were using dlt drives. 

Incidentally, most of the error 174s that I see which do not have the 

write of X bytes indicated only 1 bytes were written

signature come down to faulty media.
