Hallo Chris,

I am running 3.11 on 1 SSA100 && SSA112 for quite some time now. No problems. It's OK.

I guess the firmware you are talking about concerns the 2.1GB disk drives itself.
It is the disk internal firmware from Seagate.
There is a SUN patch 103451-04 which patches the disk firmware from V418 to V420. 
I asked ssa-managers on Jun 12 if anybody had done the upgrade and why. No answer yet.
