I'm checking on whether there are any incompatibilities in the on-disk
configuration databases. I don't believe there are (as there will
likely be between 2.x and 3.x), but it's better to be sure.

Sure.
If the RAID-5 device is an RSM Array 2000, there are a few caveats,
which are available from Sun. (Basically, the system needs to know
about the array before you try to tell VM -- duh -- and you shouldn't
have RSM-based volumes in rootdg if you're going to use the RDAC
controller-failover driver.)
We have a paper on our web site about combining VM and hardware RAID;
you can find it under "Solutions Showcase", then under "Volume Manager".
(Try in a few hours -- the paper got kinda lost and that part of the
