SSA - two hosts

We've got VM 2.1.2 (or whatever the latest patch revision is), on an
SSA attached to our S1000E.

We've got an E4001 with a fiber-optic interface, this machine needs
local (not NFS) access to the data on this SSA.

My idea is, simply export the volume from the S1000E, and import them
onto the E4001 (which would be running VM 2.4). It did not occur to
me that there might be a problem, but now I realize that is kind of
dumb.

Are there any issues here? I floated this before a couple of Sun
engineers, and didn't get any feedback to that effect.

At a later point, I would be copying the data onto VM managed
volumes on an RSM 2000 (assuming tests of that piece of equipment go well).
Any feedback about the optimal way to do this, and minimize downtime?

Another thing:

Is is sensible to run unmirrored, unstriped Logical Volumes using VxVM, if,
underneath, there is a RAID-5 device (the RSM or some other piece of
equipment). This would be totally convenient, as it would allow me to
mirror data off to other devices (say, perhaps, Sun's networked FC-AL devices,
a year or so down the line)?

Thomas Leavitt
