<DIV>I (finally!) had a chance to perform the final performance checks on the
Club's Heathkit SB-301/401 transmitter / receiver combination. This is
after replacing all of the very old electrolytic capacitors anywhere in either
box. The old capacitors had lost their ability to filter because the
electrolyte 'dries out' as these get old and are kept in high
temperatures. This results in a telltale hum in the transmitter and less
regulated voltages in the transmitter.</DIV>

<DIV>In any case, they both seem to operate very well. I'll be bringing
them back in this week and will put together a 'short form' instruction list on
how to pre-set the tuning controls and a tune up procedure before
operating. I hope we can get some use out of them on the HF bands.
In any case, they will reduce the heating bill for Broun Hall. </DIV>
