Even with a good cord the car wiring is poor at best. Usually 20 gauge behind the panel. Will not work to transmit.

They are headed to the shack for show-and-tell, and maybe some testing. Basically, the two identical Yaseu mobile radios receive transmissions from other radios, but do not transmit beyond the distance of a parking lot. The radios were powered from cigarette lighter plugs. I don't trust that.
