[K4RY] moving the K4RY shack -- again

The fellow who was supporting the high altitude balloon program has retired, and it is unsure at this time if it will continue in the long term. It is no longer a 'class' that can be taken as it was previously, so there is no credit for it when it competes for the students time. Participation has gone down, and so has performance during any recent semester.

If you are suggesting Leach as both an operating position and as a host for antennas, it isn't a good site. Access to the building is even more difficult than currently at Broun - it is only open around 7 AM to 5 PM and is locked otherwise, and that is not going to change. There is no place for antennas, and it is in an electrically noisy neighborhood. We've had problems even on 437 MHz just a building away at Allison with all kinds of EMI garbage.

I'd like to be able to more closely couple the groups as long as operating independence is assured. The satellite program certainly needs an electrically quieter location for its antennas even though those signals, too, can be remoted back to Leach or Allison.

Many thanks for the offer of infrastructure - I'm sure it will be needed.

Hello,
Have anyone contacted COSAM and Physics for a possible K4RY location? I do know there is a lot activity with the student high altitude balloons and Aubie satellites. Maybe a shack could be set up at Leach science center. I know the Aubie sat students have been given a fairly large lab to pursue their endeavors. These student activities and K4RY seem a good match.
If K4RY needs desks, tables, cabinets, chairs, for the new shack, just let me know.

- Auburn Lakes Road (I'm not familiar with the location, can you give me coordinate)?

The pavillion itself is located at: 32 40' 57.47"N; 85 30' 24.87"W

It is 2.4 miles NNE of the new fisheries building.

I was just saying that out in that area it would be radio-ideal.

We'd have to weigh the other factors to go out that far.

Unfortunately, on campus, most of the desirable land has been spoken for.

Everything from Broun through Haley and the stadium and out past the intramural fields is in a huge swale. Anywhere in there, antennas are going to be pointing into hillsides or other buildings. We don't want antennas to be near (or on) big buildings with lots of computers, nor do we want them within eyeshot of overhead power lines. Both are big sources of noise. We have seen that in spades in Broun.

The high land is up near the new parking deck and the new IT building. You can see this if you put Google Earth in 3D mode and look at it from a low oblique position.

Maybe we can put our antennas next to the Old Rotation. It is up high, and no one is going to build there anytime soon.

I'm going to be on campus Friday afternoon for a software seminar. Maybe I'll drive around and see what I can see while I am there.
